October has been an eventful month for athletics and breast cancer awareness at ACHS as the football and volleyball teams supported W.I.N.G.S., or Women in Need Gaining Strength (a local cancer support organization).
On the first Friday in October, the 3rd, football players, cheerleaders, dancers and the home crowd decked themselves in pink. At halftime, the cheer and dance teams presented the W.I.N.G.S. organization with a check from donations collected throughout the week.
Football goers were also treated to the annual mass band performance. Mass band, comprised of school district band members in grades 6-12, played the songs “YMCA” and “Barbara Ann.” Ray Caylor, a freshman, said, “I was excited to play Barbara Ann.” Owen Hawkins, a junior, said that the performance “went as well as it could have.”

The following week, ACHS hosted Senior Night and Pink Out Night for the volleyball team. During the match against Prairie View, senior Jordan Miller reached an impressive milestone in her volleyball career – 500 career kills. She’s known for her strong hits and her leadership on the court. Jordan has been a key player since her freshman year. Throughout the season, she has consistently shown effort and determination, helping to lead her team to several wins.

Seniors also received roses, which they dedicated to their parents and victims and survivors of breast cancer.

Senior Kenna Goetz dedicated her rose to Mark Powls in honor of his wife, Carmen, to remember her and honor her fight against cancer with the support of her parents.
The junior varsity and varsity teams each won their games. The varsity scores were 25-17, 25-15 against Prairie View and 25-15, 20-25, 25-15 against Osawatomie. The game also raised $435 for WINGS. Altogether, the students raised $1,137.00 for W.I.N.G.S.
