The first tournament of the year in Iola ended with a 2-7 win-loss record. It was a good start to the season, with Braden Phelps, Brooklyn Strobel, and Josie Sumner as top scorers. The JV team members competed on Wednesday, October 5, in Eudora, scoring 4-4. They are a combined 10-13 so far in matches.
In a tournament, there is usually round-robin pool play, where each team in the pool plays every other team once. In each round of play, there are 16 questions total in the categories of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Health, Social Science, Fine Arts, Year in Review, and either World Language or Miscellaneous. If a player buzzes in and is acknowledged to deliver a correct answer, they earn 10 points for the team. Penalties of -5 points are given if a player buzzes in before the moderator finishes reading the question and then gives an incorrect answer.
The top two teams from each pool compete in the finals rounds for top placement (1st place, 2nd place, etc.). Current team members are Carter Hermann, Josie Sumner, Brooklyn Strobel, Jack Neinstedt, Braden Phelps, Truett Vermillion, Bree Schafer, Charlotte Stephenson, and Brayden Friend.
