Why Don’t High Schoolers Use Lockers?

By Cambree Miller

It’s the age-old question at ACHS. Why don’t high school students use their lockers?  There are a few exceptions, including Freshman Vivian Riblet. Riblet said she uses a locker because ¨I just needed a place to store extra stuff, ¨ such as pencils, extra notebooks, and snacks. However, she has only used her locker once this year. Freshman Eddie Duncan also uses a locker. He decided to get one so he wouldn’t have to carry his stuff around. He puts folders, his bag, and extra hoodies in his locker and uses it every day.

Timber Vermillion is a sophomore who chose not to get a locker. She said that she didn’t think she had enough stuff to warrant using one, so she didn’t see the point. Vermillion said that one negative aspect of having a locker is that “going back to your locker takes more time out of your passing period and will be more likely to be late. Even if more students at ACHS got a locker, I still wouldn’t use one.”

This brings up the issue of passing periods. Students are nervous about using a locker because they are afraid it will make them late to classes. Herd mentality is also a factor. Even though Vermillion said that she wouldn’t get one even if others did, other students have mentioned that no one they know uses them, so why would they? Overall, there are multiple reasons why most high schoolers don’t use lockers. The negatives seem to outweigh the positive reasons, at least as far as students are concerned.
