When my shift starts, the first thing I do is get my supplies ready and organize everything I’ll need for the day. I always take a quick walk around to see what needs attention before I settle into my routine. If it’s a game day, my plan changes, so I try to prepare for whatever events are happening.
Every morning, we go through all the rooms, and one of my main jobs is spraying down the weight room. I also try to help the other custodians whenever I can—we work an eight-hour shift, so teamwork makes a big difference. I check the supply closets to make sure the bathrooms are stocked, and I clean the showers in the locker rooms. I also help set up the lunchroom and, when needed, pull out the bleachers to clean underneath them.
It’s not a bad job, especially when we have plenty of help. Having a single earbud in helps the time pass, as long as I can still hear what’s going on around me. One of the best parts of the job is watching students come in as freshmen and leave as seniors—I get to see them grow up right in front of me.
Throughout the day, I sweep, clean bathrooms, and handle laundry so the morning shift has what they need. In the weight room, I use a disinfecting sprayer because so many hands touch the equipment. But no two days are the same—game days, pep rallies, and special events all change the routine.
Even with the busy schedule, the job keeps me active and connected to the school community, and I’m glad to be part of making this place run smoothly.
