On December 31, 2025, at 6 pm, the NRC notified EPA Region 7 about a mysterious liquid that had been spilled at the intersection of Maple Street and Park Road; however, the residents of Garnett were not notified until the following day. On that day (January 1), the city took precautions as they were not sure if the substance was dangerous.
On January 2, a stream advisory was put in effect for the city. They warned to keep children and pets away from the water drainage system and the North Lake. The advisory did not affect the drinking water as it is supplied from Cedar ValleyResovoir and not the drainage system. The system was being continuously monitored throughout the following week and was resolved Janurary 11.
The week of the 6th, the EPA treated 66 impacted vehicles. Due to weather conditions, they had to increase their treatment and ran it through the end of the week to the ninth. On that same day, they identified the substance as an inorganic, strongly basic, sodium-based compound with a PH of 14 that is very caustic and a reactive chemical. At this time, there have been no further updates.
