It’s easy to assume students at ACHS spend all their free time scrolling TikTok, sleeping in, or maybe eating (let’s be honest, that’s fun too). But many students have hobbies that go beyond the usual routines. We wanted to find out what students and staff do in their free time that’s a little more unique.
We asked a few people to share their most interesting hobbies, and the answers were as creative as they were unexpected.
Sophomore Maliyah Elder has been crocheting since fourth grade. She loves making clothes and is currently working on a backpack. Although her mom also crochets and knits, Maliyha said she didn’t really get into the hobby herself until last year. She says crocheting allows her to be creative and make something with her own hands — a nice break from screens and homework.
Sophomore Addison Sanborn collects quarters — and specifically loves state quarters from the 1950s and earlier. She inherited the hobby from her granddad, who also collects coins.
Mrs. Markham, one of the teachers at ACHS, has a collection of Labubus, purses, and dolls. Her hobby shows that unique interests don’t stop after high school; they can bring joy and nostalgia at any age.
Freshman Eden Kennelly plays guitar and even writes her own songs. She learned to play her first chord by ear and was incredibly proud of herself. Eden uses an app to learn chords for her favorite songs, and she loves the feeling of being able to play and create music on her own.
These hobbies show that ACHS students and staff have a lot of creative ways to spend their free time. From crocheting backpacks to collecting coins, playing guitar, and curating collections, it’s clear that curiosity and personal expression come in many forms.
