What If Students Made the Rules?

By Kora Gaines

What if students made the rules instead of teachers and principals? While the idea may seem unrealistic, it raises an interesting question: would school be more enjoyable and effective if students had a stronger voice in decision-making?

To explore this idea, several students were asked which rules they would change and which they would keep if they were in charge of the school.

Freshman Coevin Velvick said she would keep the rule against bullying, but would like to allow students to use the courtyard for relaxing and studying. Freshman Kallen Willard said he would keep the open lunch policy for juniors and seniors, adding that he would remove the recently passed phone policy.

Freshman Kaylee Feuerborn shared that she would allow students to listen to music during class while keeping rules that promote respect and kindness. Sophomore Maliah Velvick said she would like the ability to call or text her parents when needed and would keep open lunch as well.

While letting students run the school could lead to fun and exciting changes, it would also come with challenges. Without structure, it could be difficult to maintain a strong focus on education. A more realistic solution may be to find ways to incorporate student input while still maintaining guidance from teachers and administrators.

If students feel heard, school can become a more positive and effective place to learn.
