This past Friday, April 3, Anderson County FFA members traveled to Fort Scott Community College to compete in a variety of agriculture-related contests during Aggie Days. Events included livestock judging, food science, vet science, poultry, milk quality, entomology, farm management, floriculture, meats, and nursery and landscape.

Several students were asked about the contests they competed in, how they placed, what they could improve on, and their favorite part of the experience.

Sophomore Max Sims competed in the poultry contest, which included 115 participants. He placed 70th overall with a score of 310 points. When asked about his favorite part of the day, Sims said it was the bus ride home, where students listened to music together. He added that next time he would like to spend more time studying beforehand to improve his overall performance.

Another sophomore, Lilly Kent, competed in the milk quality and products contest. She had a strong showing, placing 2nd overall with a score of 242 points. Kent said her favorite part of the day was also the bus ride home, along with stopping for food and listening to music with Mr. Alley. She said she plans to study more for the 50-question general knowledge exam in the future.

Junior Sienna Partida participated in the food science contest and placed 39th out of 92 competitors, earning a score of 96 points. She said her favorite part of the contest was the triangle test, in which participants are given three food samples and must identify which one differs from the other two. Partida noted that she would like to study more for the knowledge portion of the contest next time.

Overall, Anderson County FFA had a strong showing across the different competitions. As a chapter, they placed in the top 10 in every contest they competed in, highlighting the team’s effort and preparation throughout the day.
