By Brayden Friend and Brynna Owen
On April 11, 2026, at Mill Valley High School, student musicians from both the band and the choir showcased their talents through a variety of solo performances and small-ensemble pieces. The event highlighted not only musical skill but also the dedication and growth of the students involved.
At 8 a.m., the Anderson County Treble Choir took the stage to perform “Hope Lingers On” by Low Lily. Their performance earned a 1 (Outstanding) rating, the highest possible, and secured their qualification for the state competition. Traditionally, the treble choir consists of all female voices, but Choir Director Natasha Goetz made an exception this year by allowing two male singers to join. She explained that if they could successfully sing their parts and contribute positively to the group, there was no reason they should be excluded. Sophomore Shep Carver, typically a Bass 1, embraced the challenge by singing Soprano 1, while Brayden Friend, a Tenor 2, took on the Alto 2 part. Brayden also played a key role in leading the body percussion, helping establish the tempo and guide the ensemble throughout the piece.
In addition to the ensemble performance, several individual performances stood out. Kris Holloway performed “Nel cor” and “Shenandoah,” demonstrating strong vocal control and expression. His efforts earned him a 1 (Outstanding) rating and qualification for state.
Brayden Friend also performed two pieces, “To Lo Sai” and “Poor Boy.” Despite feeling uncertain going into the performance, he delivered a strong showing and earned a 1 (Outstanding) rating, proving his preparation and effort paid off.
Another standout performance came from Wesley Mills, who performed his piece on the marimba. He did an excellent job showcasing both technical skill and musicality, earning a 1 (Outstanding) rating and qualifying for state.
With these accomplishments, Anderson County’s Treble Choir, Kris Holloway, Brayden Friend, and Wesley Mills have all qualified to compete at state on April 25. Their success reflects not only individual talent but also the strength of the music program as a whole. Congratulations as well to the following for earning 2 (Excellent) ratings: Emily Sobba, Joni Tate, Shep Carver, Mixed Chorus, and Owen Hawkins.
