This year, ACJSHS introduced a new coding class taught by Mr. Linn. We asked him a few questions about what students learn in the class and what they can expect if they decide to sign up.
What do students do in your coding class?
“Intro to Computer Coding focuses on foundational computer science concepts and problem-solving through code. We use Python as our primary programming language to learn about control structures, functions, and data structures. It’s very hands-on. Students spend a lot of time writing code to build a personal software portfolio, including working calculators, currency converters, and interactive games.”
Do your lessons include game design, robotics, or web development?
“Towards the end of the semester, we touch on simple game design as part of our project portfolios. We focus on mastering the fundamentals of programming logic using Python.”
Is the class easy or difficult for students?
“I would say it can be a mix. Learning to develop software and troubleshooting bugs can be a fun challenge, especially since programming incorporates math skills alongside new technical concepts. However, because we build up step-by-step through projects, students quickly get the hang of it.”
What would you say to students who are thinking about taking your class?
“I would say give it a try! You don’t need any prior experience to succeed in the class, just a curiosity about how software works and a willingness to solve problems. Programming is a skill that lets you build real tools from scratch, and this class is the introductory course for the new Programming and Software Design CTE Pathway.”
How has your teaching experience been so far?
“It has been fantastic! There is a mix of students at various skill levels. Some came in with prior coding experience, and others were completely new to it. Seeing everyone building their skills has been the most rewarding part of teaching this course.”
